Data spills can happen on any type of digital device and the procedures your organization puts in place to handle them is key in controlling the damage and recovering quickly.

One of the most susceptible areas to digital data spill are hand held devices. Handheld devices are great for improving everyday efficiency and communication in organizations, however they pose a security risk which could prove to be costly.

How do you deal with a data spill?
Typically organizations have simply destroyed their handheld devices instead of recycling them. This method, although effective, is not cost conscious. Each device that is sent to be processed can cost your organization thousands of dollars because of lost device, lost time, and the costs associated with redeploying a new device into the system.

The same methodology associated with clearing data spills on a device can be used to recycle a device for redistribution. All wiping methodology follows the requirements of DOD 5220-22M.
